Week start: 29th October

Review of the week just gone

This week it has mainly been conditioning.

It never ceases to amaze me how a little knowledge encourages you to be an overnight expert. This week, I am an expert in conditioning or so I kept saying to myself as I ran at dead slow for the three run sessions completed. I am ok with this – the mantra repeated in my head. Heart rate 180 beats per minutes less my age plus a bit and that’s the max you can run at you will get faster. That’s the second part of the mantra. Hope nobody recognises me running like this that’s the third and final element of this weeks repetitive chatter in my head. Thankfully time has gone back 1 hour and it’s now comfortably dark most of the time.

The resonance and echo from last Sundays triathlon training course has so far lasted one week. I’ve even referred to the folder of training material we received set my 2013 objectives and put together an outline training plan. Good really and  a reflection of the quality of the training provided from Warren, Steve and Dave.

Conditioning training rolls over into cycling and swimming albeit it’s good to observe how 60-70% of max heart rate swimming only works as long as no one is swimming alongside then strangely, the pace of both swimmers slightly increases to about 95% – only to the end of the pool. Well you have too really.

Seven MVH took to the road on board winter bikes, as a cold but dry morning welcomed those at Barton Waterfront on Sunday. A Warren route so mainly mud packed roads (in case you missed the mud first time around we did the same mud loaded road twice!) and then many winding lanes somewhere in Staffordshire was the order of the day. Lots of chatter as the small chain ring was given some stick 90-100 cadence at a conditioning heart rate except for hills where testosterone was allowed out to play. Autumn colours flashed past as the MVH peloton moved between sets of lead riders taking the wind to ensure those cyclists behind had the opportunity to revel in conditioning mode.

Oh happy days… Conditioning weeks should always look like this!

The BTF also announced this week an aim to qualify up 1,000 GB triathletes to compete during the 11th to 15th September 20013 World Championship event in London.
It’s difficult not to think that we all have the opportunity to wear one of those GB tri suits. There is time.

Review of the week just gone

This week it has mainly been… quite good really.

Training carries on – conditioning, conditioning + technique, technique. However I for one have noted it is again the time of year when – less lactic and physical tiredness after exercise – are the main observations of the week.

To refresh for some and to educate for others – Sundays Intermediate Triathlon course from Warren Simms, Steve Herriman and Dave Brayer could not have been timed better. 16 attended the Sunday morning course, listened, questioned, then ran the track and undertook the core training session. The morning flew past. The mantras of the morning…

Running slower to run faster, swim slower to swim faster, cycle slower to cycle
faster. “train slower to race faster”

We are endurance athletes. Ok then … Running at 70% of Max heart rate isn’t easy. But as the evidence points out – training below your maximum aerobic heart rate is good for you… while in the conditioning period. Creating annual training plans, weekly training schedules, example plans – it was well worth the time.

Meanwhile across the world in Auckland, New Zealand, Mick Skivington donned the GB tri suit and took part in the World Aquathon championships and the Olympic distance Age Group ITU world Championships event. A tough and challenging course – the results are posted below.

This was also the week-end of the BUPA Birmingham half marathon and results are also below.

Finally, this week, the mid week swimming session on Thursday evenings at Abbotts Bromley School was booked out until Christmas. 3 weeks in and it was agreed – book the pool until Christmas. Lots of positive feedback about the Thursday night swim. Great facility, coaches being able to spend valuable time with individual and groups of swimmers on technique feedback and appropriate conditioning sets for this time of year.

Clumber Park Duathlon

23rd March 2013 – NOW Open for Entries
The Clumber Park Classic Duathlon is now open. The Standard distance is a “Category A” race in the MVH Club Championships and the Sprint distance is race 1 in the MVH Novice Championships.
See http://www.onestepbeyond.org.uk/clumber-park-duathlon.php

Both distances are ITU World Duathlon Age Group qualifiers and the Standard distance is also an ETU European Duathlon Championships qualifier. The implications are places may fill reasonably quickly and there will be some really good athletes taking part.

A run course that tests and a superb cycle course make for a great March day out. Some from MVH have already click through on the Enter Online button and signed up. It’s a great event to assess progress early in the 2013 season.

New Arrivals may challenge Triathlon Training

Two arrivals into the world bring joy and wonder to two MVH triathletes:

Number 1 for Claire and Lee MacDonald – Lilah Rose MacDonald arrived October 12.

A week-end of high emotion including an induction to Scottish heritage. A perfect start…
Number 2 for Nigel Elson and Caroline Squires, Charlie Derek Elson was born on 29th September. Caroline almost matching Nigel on his sprint run times gave birth in 22 minutes – as Nigel states – has to be a PB!

Week start: 15th October

Start of week news letter – w/c 15th October

Review of the week just gone

This week it has mainly been… getting colder.
Sunday morning – 0 deg C.  Where did that come from?

Actually it was a superb Sunday morning, the sun was bright and the company was happy, spinning both legs and stories as the 14 strong MVH peleton headed east to Orton on the Hill and a loop through Twycross.  Base conditioning – 70km in the legs and with a few hours in the saddle at easy heart rates – it was a joy – but it was noticeable that winter saddle endurance may be another development area for some.

The cycle workout followed two really, really good coached swimming sessions during the week.  Abbots Bromley may be a bit further than Repton but Thursday pool sessions are getting a huge thumbs up from those attending.  The focus on technique is starting to really pay dividends and then when followed by Saturdays swim coached session – the possibilities for swim improvement are there to be taken.

Running

Running should not be ignored.  And for many, the Tuesday night run from Bannatynes continues to give welcomed running company as Warren winds the runners around a variety of Burton haunts.

So Autumn is full on and for many the real preparation for the 2013 season gets underway.  Let the journey continue well with no injury please…
Looking forward one week, the Triathlon Training session at Shobnall Leisure complex on Sunday 21st looks to be a perfectly timed programme in that before base training progresses to far – the course attendees will add valuable knowledge and a “plan” to deliver those Triathlon goals for 2013.
May the week pass quickly with minimal stress, more swim training, running and maybe a wee bit of turbo work….and let another week-end commence.  Bring it on!

NEW Mid Week Coached Swim Session

Thursday’s 7.30pm to 8.30pm, Abbotts Bromley School
The Thursday coached swimming session has MVH and Burntwood Tri Club members revelling in the new mid week swim facility.  7:30pm for 1hr every Thursday.

Progressive front crawl technique coaching and a swim conditioning set.  2 swim coaches at each session to support triathletes swim development..
Location is as follows:  ALL WELCOME whatever your swim ability.

The Burton road to Abbots Bromley B5234. At Abbots Bromley turn right onto the B5014 towards the main street in Abbots Bromley and direction – Uttoxeter.  Almost immediately the road bends sharp left opposite the Coach & Horses pub. Just after the bend turn left onto a drive into a carpark area. If you get to the zebra crossing you’ve gone too far. The pool is immediately on the right as you drive into the carpark area. The postcode is WS15 3BW.

Triathlon Training Course – for Stage 2 Triathletes

21st October 0900hrs to 1230hrs (ish)
Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton – Cost £25 (MAX 30 places)

Jonathan Hydon, John Philliskirk, Mick Fishwick, Dianne Pickering, Jonny Fitton, Ben Starbuck, Jan Driscoll and Colin McLean are some of the names already signed up for Sunday morning 21st October at Shobnall Leisure Complex.

Each with different goals for 2013 from faster sprints to PB’s at the Ironman event, the personal training plans will be different but enhancing knowledge of how best to structure personal training across the year is the objective. For many, over training and injury have been unwelcome experiences.  Training for speed too early or missing out on strength training and for how long on each and how intensive does it need to be?

Sunday’s training course will shine the light on all of these subjects and more.
There is no doubt – it will be a superb session.

To complete the morning, every course attendee will also be given a small library of course reading and reference materials.
No excuses then for the 2013 season training programme.
If you are interested in attending please respond to this newsletter item to mvh.bulletin@gmail.com with a YES – COUNT me in

Invitations have been extended to Burntwood Tri club and Derby Tri Club

MVH Tri Club “NEW” Website – Latest

The new website for MVH tri club is imminent.
Just a few glitches with WordPress…..as final items are added before we go live…

If you are reading this and for you “wordpress” is a pleasure, a passion and easy – please contact mvh.bulletin@gmail.com  as your insight and wise council would be hugely welcome.

A second request

We are looking to build a team of MVH website scribblers &/or internet browser-ists
The only qualification needed is the talent of being curious on what’s happening out there in the triathlon world, what’s being talked about or spotting what’s just bizarre.  Across swimming, cycling and running.

To share your passion for sport and the stuff you have come across or viewpoint you would like to share with the MVH website readers.
We would like to bring to the website interesting and novel items from a current triathlon news story or to an item on the latest Pinarello or a different and personal perspective on what running shoes not to purchase…

Alternatively, it can be writing two or three paragraphs about things closer to the MVH triathlon club horizon – up and coming races, race experiences, a great training session. The objective is to create a MVH website we all want to visit regularly – yes to read about things MVH but also to read about different Triathlon stuff that grabs our attention.

A team of about 6-8 people is the aim, submitting, about once every two weeks, short articles or links for the website. So far we have two “journalistic” hands raised – Sarah Clark and Colin McLean.

If would like to be part of the website team – please email mvh.bulletin@gmail.com

A practical guide to injury prevention: 8th November 8pm to 9.30pm

Shobnall Leisure complex
This session will be lead by the physiotherapy team from the Running Form shop on Station Road in Burton.
Injuries are an inevitable consequence when athletes are pushing themselves harder and further to achieve personal goals and achievements.  Many injuries can be prevented with some very simple exercises, routines and stretching.

The purpose of the evening is to equip runners with the knowledge of key triggers leading to injury and highlighting key running injuries.  The outcome of the night is all around the philosophy that “Prevention is better than cure and repair”.

The session is practical based with short exercises that can be done within just a few minutes! Self massage and key stretches will also be included.
Cost is £5.  For more info see http://www.ssan.org.uk/
