Start of week news letter – w/c 1st October
Review of the week just gone
Autumn rolls in and to celebrate, the cycling shorts are replaced with eh… longer ones that go past the ankles. However as training moves to conditioning and the temperature reduces – this also means coffee stops become an integral part of an effective training regime. Which for some is … nice.
Saturday swimming and then Sunday cycling from Barton tested this logic and this format for training was found to be highly recommended.
The saturday swim at Repton saw more work for the clubs fins collection followed by a “65% of heart rate” conditioning set. Bliss really.
The conditioning theme continued on Sunday as 11 set off from Barton Marina at level 2/3 cycling pace in the small chain ring. 8 wearing MVH branded jackets meant the peloton really looked the part, as the group went west and south on a Steve and Warren route through, for some, undiscovered Staffordshire lanes. Superb.
An almost unprecedented stop towards the end of the cycle route at Fradley canalside café was received with delight. Really you could sense the
surprise. The group enjoyed coffee and tea with great banter and are we doing this again? Don’t expect it every week but for the next two or three weeks… It’s
just what end of season cycling should be all about! Enjoying the moments.
For the juniors, Saturday was the day of the Lincoln Juniors Tri and for one junior this was an “awesome” experience. Theo Hamilton took part in his first triathlon, on Saturday and is now desperate for more and has already set his young eyes on a quality road bike for future events!
Sunday was also the day of the Barton fun run, which was great success. All in all a great week-end.
MVH Tri Club Winter & Spring Training programme
Warren Simms
This is the end of a fantastic year for Triathlon with the Olympics and some fantastic performances from members of MVH. Our thoughts should be turning to next year and how we can carry all the good work over and emulate the successes of this year.
As MVH we want to see you all succeed and be as much as you want to be; however, you have a part to play too. This is the ideal time of year to reflect on the
previous season, and start preparing and organising yourself for the next one. So what do you have to do? Well here are some pointers:
- What do you want to get out of next year
- Think about your goals for next year
- Do you have a target race for next year
- When are you going to start your training
Keeping consistency in your training is a major part in obtaining improvements as an athlete, which is really about staying motivated, and looking at strategies for maintaining motivation including: training with others, receiving feedback (HR, power data, Time trial results), having somebody oversee your training. These can all help maintain motivation and inspiration to train. Above all enjoy yourself!
Training is a learning experience, getting to know how your body works, understanding what stimulus it needs to improve, to improve as an athlete you
need to understand what your sport requires of you and how you can make yourself adapt best to those requirements.
The start of the training year will depend upon your personal circumstances and objectives, but this should be October to November for triathletes, as part of our support the MVH coaches have put together an overarching system that will start on the 1st October 2012.
The programme of activity and intensity will build towards the start of the season, which will be further supported by a number of planned class room and activity based sessions to explain how, why and what we are doing.
If you want to be involved keep looking at our new web site (to be launched soon) for news on training sessions and other activities available over this winter and spring. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR – TAKE PART!!!!!
Triathlon Training Day – 21st October
MVH Tri Club Coaching Team
The Next MVH Tri Club Triathlon Training Day
The MVH Coaches are pleased to announce the next course in a series of education events, which builds upon the success of the course we ran in July of this year. So what is it all about?
Well as we go into the new training season I am sure you all have similar thoughts, how do I train to improve, what do I need to do and how do I know I am getting better?
If you are a bit confused then this course will help you build a basic understanding of fitness and what it means, tools to help you understand how to training and a test to see where you are starting from.
The planned date for the course is the 21st October 2012, if you are interested in attending please send you details, by responding to this email or send an email to warren.simms@btinternet.com for further information.

A practical guide to injury prevention:
8th November 8pm to 9.30pm
Shobnall leisure complex
This session will be lead by the physiotherapy team from the Running Form shop on Station Road in Burton. Injuries are an inevitable consequence when athletes are pushing themselves harder and further to achieve personal goals and achievements. Many injuries can be prevented with some very simple exercises, routines and stretching.
The purpose of the evening is to equip runners with the knowledge of key triggers leading to injury and highlighting key running injuries. The outcome of the night is all around the philosophy that “Prevention is better than cure and repair”.
The session is practical based with short exercises that can be done within just a few minutes! Self massage and key stretches will also be included.
Cost is £5. For more info see http://www.ssan.org.uk/
